About DDR Memory

DDR (Double Data Rate DRAM) memory is similar to the older SDRAM technology, but it significantly improves its capabilities in one way. SDRAM transfers data at every rising edge of the clock signal. DDR transfers data at both edges of the clock signal, allowing a double rate of transmission speed. This allows DDR memory to operate at speeds at least twice that of older SDRAM devices.

Current DDR speeds are PC3200, PC2700, PC2100 and PC1600, also known as PC400, PC333, PC266 and PC200. This refers to the module's speed in MHz.

The industry expects to shift mass production to DDR-II in 2005. The DDR-II standard will support much higher frequencies, starting at 533 MHz.
